On August 8, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) announced: "Germany will not approve any exports of arms that could be used in the Gaza Strip until further notice." This partial halt to arms deliveries to Israel, announced by a Chancellor of the Christian Democratic Union, is shaking the foundations of German-Israeli relations.
These are not just words, these are deeds. And no addendum or attempt at explanation makes them better or more understandable. These words are a betrayal of Israel. They are an act of treason – at a time when Israel is defending itself in a seven-front war against enemies who would love nothing more than the annihilation of the only Jewish state. As Germans and as Christians standing with Israel, we condemn in the strongest possible terms the announced halt to arms exports.
Back in January, Friedrich Merz had assured everyone that there would be no restrictions on arms deliveries under his leadership. And now this about-face. "But a friendship can withstand that," Merz says. But what kind of friends are they who don't keep their word?
Germany must recognize that antisemitism is constantly evolving and adapting to the changing times. Chancellor Merz could not have provided Hamas terrorists and all Israel-haters on German streets with a better justification for their actions. His decision, after all, suggests that Israel is committing injustices in the Gaza Strip.
I still refuse to accept the bitter realization that Germany's raison d'état—its promise to guarantee Israel's security—is over. But I am deeply shaken. Merz can still reverse his outrageous decision. Let us pray for the courage and wisdom to do so.
